How to Edit Text in a PDF Free — Without Acrobat
September 20, 2026 · 5 min read
You need to change one date on an invoice, or fix a name you spelled wrong, and the person who has the original file left the company two years ago. This is the most common reason anyone goes looking for a PDF editor.
How to edit text in a PDF
- Open RizzPDF Edit PDF Text
- Upload your PDF — the editable lines of text are outlined on the page
- Click a line and type the replacement
- Add a new text box anywhere if you need to
- Download the edited PDF
Why PDFs are hard to edit in the first place
A PDF isn't a document in the way a Word file is. It's a set of drawing instructions: put this glyph at this exact point, in this font, at this size. There are no paragraphs that reflow and no sentences that know they belong together.
Worse, a PDF usually carries only a subsetof each font — just the letters the document actually uses. If your file never contained a capital Q, the letter Q may simply not exist inside it. That's why no browser-based editor can genuinely type in the original typeface.
What honest browser editing does
RizzPDF replaces the line: the original characters are deleted from the file, the space behind them is filled with the page's own background colour, and your new text is drawn in the closest standard font — Helvetica, Times or Courier, bold or italic to match. Long replacements are shrunk to fit the line.
For a date, a figure, a name or an address, the result looks right. For a paragraph in a distinctive corporate typeface, you will see the difference. Anyone promising perfect in-place editing of any PDF in a browser is overselling.
Which approach suits your job
| What you need to do | Best approach |
|---|---|
| Fix a typo, date or number | Edit the text directly |
| Rewrite whole paragraphs | Convert to Word, edit, export again |
| Fill in blanks on a form | Fill PDF Form |
| Remove something sensitive | Redact — editing is not redaction |
| Change text on a scan | There is no text to change — it's an image. OCR first |
Is the old text really gone?
Yes. The replaced characters are removed from the page's content, not painted over — so nobody can select the area and copy out what used to be there. That said, if your goal is secrecy rather than correction, use the redaction tool, which is built for it and shows you exactly what it will remove.
Free, and no watermark
Editing is free and unlimited on RizzPDF, with no account. Nothing is uploaded — the file is opened and rewritten inside your browser tab, which matters when the document you're correcting is a contract or a payslip.
A word about editing other people's documents
Changing figures on an invoice, a bank statement or a certificate someone else issued isn't a technical question. Fix your own documents; don't alter records other people rely on.
